About Me

Hi there! I’m Emma, but you can call me Bassett (there’s always too many Emma’s around!). With over 5 years experience living in 4 different prefectures of Japan, and over 13 entries on a tourist visa, I thought it was time to share what I’ve learnt and am still learning about life and travel here.

So what is Bassett’s bouken all about? Well, bouken – 冒険 – means adventure in Japanese, which of course is my favourite thing to do! Even though I work full time, I make sure to at least experience something new every weekend to keep me sane. Plus you could say my journey with Japan has also been quite an adventure. I very much feel my experience in Japan is like being lost but found in translation. The first time I lived here, I spent a lot of my time lost and confused in a culture I had a lot to learn about. The second time around I truly feel at home and can’t imagine life elsewhere. I could write a huge article on what changed and how I changed my mindset, which I’ll probably do at some point so look out for that!

Anyway, from writing about my travels here and sharing hidden gems I find, I’ll also be sharing about what life is like here and general tips of how best to enjoy life and travel in the Land of the Rising Sun.

What to expect

Japanese culture

I like to think of my second job being a part-time shrine hunter! I love nothing more than exploring the unique shrines and temples here and learning about the fascinating culture and traditions of Japan.

Nature

Japan has some of the most breathtaking scenery, especially with the truly distinct four seasons. From soft pink cherry blossoms in spring to golden ginkgo in autumn, you’re always surrounded by beauty here.

Cafés, restaurants & hotels

From kawaii cafes to the highest number of Michelin star restaurants, there are endless opportunities to try something new in Tokyo! I’ll also be sharing my favourite ryokan and hotels so you know where to stay too!
